Miami FC vs. Rochester Rhinos
Date/time: Sunday, July 13th, 2008 6:00 pm EDT Location: PAETEC Park, Rochester, NY Weather: Sunny Attendance: 7,296
On a beautiful night for Soccer in the flower city The Rhinos looked to continue their home dominance and their ascension in the USL first division standings against the 5th place, Miami FC Blues. The two teams battled to a halftime stalemate, with the defensive minded Blues effectively preventing the Rochester offense from doing much in their offensive third of the field. Miami generated the first half's only decent scoring opportunities. Scott Vallow made a brilliant save just 56 seconds into the match stopping Miami's Juan Pablo Galavis who broke in alone and fired a point blank shot that Vallow dove to his left to block. The left post made the other big save for the Rhinos as Miami's Sean Cameron nearly tallied a goal from 13 yards out on a shot that grazed off the outside of the post. Vallow recorded three saves in the first half, and the Rhino defense including newly acquired Andrew Gregor making his first start for Rochester, held firm to preserve the scoreless first half tie. The second half saw a different look for Rochester with Mauricio Salles, Johnny Menyongar, and John Ball replacing first half starters Matthew Delicate, Rey Martinez, and Steve Guppy. The new look paid off immediately as Menyongar recorded Rochester's third shot of the match sending a header on goal on a cross from Gregor less than two minutes into the second half. The Rhinos continued to pressure the Blues with four quality chances in the next 15 minutes of the half, including a full volley from Ze Roberto that was just over the crossbar and a text book bicycle from Mauricio Salles from 15 yards out that Miami keeper, Josh Saunders kept out of the back of the net. Rochester had nearly scored on a misplayed deflection by a Miami defender that bounced of the left post just seven minutes earlier. Although the Rhino's spirited second half effort produced six shots on goal and their relentless pressure created four corner kick opportunities, Miami's shell defense was up to the challenge. In a hard fought match that featured 26 total fouls, 15 of which were booked to Miami, neither team was able to find the back of the net and Rochester settled for the tie. The tie puts Rochester at (4-5-6) and gives them sole possession of ninth place, pending the outcome of the Carolina RailHawks and Vancouver Whitecaps later tonight in Vancouver. The Rhinos remain undefeated at home in USL first division play since a one to nil loss to first place Charleston back on the seventeenth of May. The Rhinos look to continue their climb in the USL first division standings as they hit the road to play a team they recently defeated, the Seattle Sounders when the Sounders host the Rhinos this Friday. |
