The Rochester Rhinos defeated FC Dallas Reserves 3:0 in Sahlen's Stadium on Friday, July 11th 2014. The Rhinos win broke a two match losing streak and three match winless streak for Rochester. Rhinos 2012 Most Valuable Player and 2014 leading scorer JC Banks opened the scoring with a first half goal off of an assist from striker Colin Rolfe. Rolfe scored the second goal of the match off of an assist from center back Babacar Diallo to give Rochester a 2:0 lead at half time. New England Revs loanee Alec Sundly closed out the scoring late in the second half off of an assist from substitute midfielder Lance Rozeboom. Rhinos rookie goalkeeper John McCarthy earned his eighth shutout in 14 career starts for Rochester.
Rochester opened the scoring in in the 21st minute. Rhinos right midfielder Jonny Mendoza received the ball on the right flank and served the ball into the box. Rochester's attacking midfielder JC Banks made a near post run but left the ball to set up striker Colin Rolfe for a blistering one touch shot on goal. FC Dallas goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez made a reflex save at point blank range to deny Rolfe, but Banks spun off his initial run and was there to tap in the rebound for his sixth goal of the season.
Rochester doubled its advantage in the 31st minute. Rhinos left midfielder Alex Dixon led a break out of the Rhinos half of the pitch down the left flank in the 30th minute. FC Dallas Reserves midfielder Ryan Hollingshead tracked back on Dixon and attempted a sliding tackle. Hollingshead missed the ball but got all of Dixon, and head referee Chris Trottier booked Hollingshead for the tackle. Rochester center midfielder Alec Sundly served the ensuing free kick into the Reserves box from forty yards out on the left flank . Rhinos center back Babacar Diallo, who pushed forward for the set piece, won a header fifteen yards out on the right side of the box. He flicked the ball back across the area to Rolfe on the left post. Rolfe was left completely unmarked and hit a 12 yard volley past a helpless Gonzalez. The goal was Rolfe's first league goal of the season. He had previously scored in three of the Rhinos four Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup matches including the Fourth Round upset victory over D.C. United and the Fifth Round loss to New England Revs.
The Rhinos scored the final goal to close out the match in the 87th minute. Rochester substitute center midfielder Lance Rozeboom picked up a loose ball in the middle of the pitch 35 yards out. Rozeboom carried the ball to the top of the box before playing a delicate through ball to Sundly on the left side of the FC Dallas box. Sundly took his first touch away from a Reserves defender, settled the ball with his second touch, and then finished past Gonzalez. The goal was Sundly's first as a professional.
FC Dallas Reserves had the first chance of the match off of a corner kick in the fifth minute. Michel swung a left footed service into the Rhinos penalty area. Rhinos rookie goalkeeper John McCarthy came off of his line to punch the ball up in the air with two fists at the back post on top of the six yard box. McCarthy then backpedaled two steps to catch the ball comfortably and end the visitors threat.
After going three weeks without scoring a goal the Rochester Rhinos approached the first half with the energy and enthusiasm that allowed them to create chances throughout the first half. Jonny Mendoza's energy and movement off the ball was particularly essential for the home side in first half hour of the match.
The Rhinos recorded the first shot of the match in the 14th minute. Mendoza unlocked the FC Dallas Reserves defense with a through ball to Rochester captain Tyler Rosenlund. The pass put Rosenlund in behind the Reserves back four, and he surged into the left side of the visitors penalty area. Rosenlund cut the ball back two steps into the box and found Dixon at the top of the FC Dallas penalty area. Dixon had a half chance on a volley that sailed over the FC Dallas crossbar.
Two minutes later the Rhinos had their second chance of the half. Rolfe received the ball at this feet on the top left side of the FC Dallas box. Rolfe settled the ball with his first touch, and then played Dixon through into the Reserves box with his second touch. Dixon dribbled down the left side of the box before crossing the ball to Mendoza at the far post. Mendoza put his effort on goal, but Gonzalez kicked the ball away to keep it out of his goal.
After the Rhinos opened up a two goal advantage FC Dallas midfielder Michel gave Rochester goalkeeper McCarthy another difficult corner kick to deal with in the 37th minute. Michel's left footed service was on goal, but McCarthy parried the tricky service awkwardly up and over the cross bar for another corner kick. Michel went to the other side of the pitch and served in the ensuing corner kick. This time McCarthy was much more emphatic in punching the ball away with two fists at the near post.
The Rhinos had the last two chance of the first half in the 42nd minute. A one-two between Banks and Rosenlund down the left side of the FC Dallas penalty area set Banks loose in the left advanced flank. Banks cut the ball back and slowed down play with a couple touches before splitting the Reserves defense with a pass to Dixon at the top left corner of the box. Dixon hit a hard effort on goal with his first touch but it was just over the crossbar. Two minutes later Rosenlund whipped an early ball into the Reserves box from the right flank that found Dixon making a near post run. Dixon hit a half chance on a volley that found the side netting.
Rochester went into half time with a two goal lead for only the second time this season, and out shot visiting FC Dallas Reserves eight to one in the first forty-five minutes.
FC Dallas Reserves responded by playing much more directly to open the second half. The match settled down after the first 15 minutes, and both teams created chances in end-to-end action.
FC Dallas Reserves had the first chance of the second half. In the 60th minute the visitors pumped a long ball forward into the Rhinos half of the pitch, and Reserves forward Cobi Span was inexplicably able to split Rhinos center backs Kyle Hoffer and Diallo. Span deftly chipped the bouncing ball in the Rochester penalty area over the head of onrushing goalkeeper McCarthy, but Span's effort was denied by the cross bar. One minute later FC Dallas attacking midfielder Danny Garcia shot a ball over McCarthy's goal.
Rochester heeded the warning that FC Dallas provided them, and the home team responded immediately with their first action of the half two minutes later. The Rhinos Dixon got in behind the FC Dallas Reserves back four, but goalkeeper Gonzalez got down at his feet to smother the ball. One minute later Rochester first half goal scorer Rolfe had a half chance that Gonzalaez was also able to snuff out.

After taking two aggressive touches toward goal Garcia played a cheeky back heel to Hollingshead who was behind him. Hollingshead approached the ball and hit his shot to the far post but, McCarthy dove to his left to parry it away. The rebound found FC Dallas right midfielder Jonathan Top at the top of the Rhinos box, and he hit the bouncing ball with a half volley on goal, but McCarthy was already back on his feet to smother the shot.
At the other end Dixon narrowly missed finishing a shot at the far post from the right side of the FC Dallas Reserves penalty area.
Rhinos head coach Bob Lilley rang in the changes with three substitutions over the next nine minutes. In the 67th minute forward Levi Houapeu replaced Mendoza in Lilley's three man attacking midfield. Center midfielder Lance Rozeboom replaced Dixon in the 70th minute, and striker Matt Luzunaris replaced Rolfe in a like-for-like change in the 76th minute.
Lilley's fresh legs settled the match down for Rochester, but fouls from both teams led to cautions during the same period of time. The Rhinos and FC Dallas combined for only nine fouls in the first half, but both teams committed eight fouls each in the second half. Rochester's Sundly was cautioned in the 65th minute and Rozeboom was cautioned in the 78th minute.
