Rochester Rhinos defender Troy Roberts and goalkeeper Neal Kitson have both been named to the 2011 USL PRO All-League Second Team.
Troy Roberts and Neal Kitson anchored a Rochester Rhinos defense that was among the best in USL PRO this season. The Rhinos were third overall in goals conceded with 23 in 24 league matches. At Sahlen’s Stadium Rochester was even better with an 8-2-2 home record and only seven goals conceded in twelve league games.
Troy Roberts is in his second season with the Rochester Rhinos. Roberts began the season by being selected the captain of the Rhinos by head coach Bob Lilley. He appeared in 20 USL PRO League matches this year and logged a total of 1,717 minutes. Last season Roberts was recognized as a U.S. Soccer Division Two Elite Eleven selection after playing every minute of every match in 2010. Roberts played 61 matches over four seasons for the Los Angeles Galaxy from 2005-2008. He was a member of the Galaxy’s double-winning side in 2005.
Neal Kitson is in his second season with the Rochester Rhinos. He finished the 2011 USL PRO season with a 12-7-4 record and nine shutouts. He made 76 saves and posted a 0.956 goals-against average. Kitson logged 2,070 minutes in 23 matches. Kitson finished the season ranked first in wins, second in games, minutes, and shutouts, and third in saves. Kitson became the latest in a long line of stand-out goalkeepers for the Rhinos after inheriting the starting position from incumbent Scott Vallow during the 2010 season. Kitson graduated from St. John’s University after he posted the lowest goals-against average in the nation (0.48) as a senior. This is the first All-League honor of Kitson’s professional career.
The finalists for Coach of the Year, Defender of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player will be announced on Wednesday, August 31, with the awards being presented at the USL PRO Championship Media Luncheon on Friday, September 2 in Orlando.
